In a shocking incident, three teenagers from the Greater Toronto Area were apprehended by Durham police after allegedly carjacking an Uber driver at gunpoint in Whitby. The incident took place in the early hours of Saturday, leading to a dramatic turn of events as the stolen vehicle flipped shortly after the crime.

According to Durham police, they received a report from a male Uber driver who claimed that his vehicle had been stolen by three unknown suspects in the Thornton and Taunton roads area. Upon responding to the scene, officers discovered the victim, who had endured a violent assault, including being pistol-whipped and repeatedly punched by the assailants.

The suspects fled the area in the stolen vehicle, but their escape was short-lived. A short distance away, the car flipped, forcing them to abandon it and flee on foot into a nearby forest. Thankfully, law enforcement swiftly located and arrested all three suspects without incident. During the arrest, an airsoft handgun was recovered as evidence.

The Uber driver, who experienced both physical and emotional injuries as a result of the traumatizing incident, is currently in the process of recovering. The authorities are providing necessary support to assist him in overcoming the aftermath of the ordeal.

The arrested individuals have been identified as 18-year-old Taiye Motiki-Stephens from Oshawa, a 16-year-old female from Scarborough, and a 16-year-old male from Brampton. They are each facing charges of robbery and possession of a weapon for committing an offence. As the two 16-year-olds fall under the jurisdiction of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, their identities cannot be disclosed.

All three accused individuals were held for a bail hearing, as the investigation continues. The Durham Regional Police Service’s Major Crime Robbery Unit is urging anyone with additional information to come forward and assist in the case.

Incidents like these serve as a stark reminder of the importance of community safety and the need for prompt police intervention. The authorities are committed to pursuing justice and ensuring the well-being of residents.
