A violent carjacking and shooting late on June 12 has led to the arrest of three suspects, including two teens, after York Regional Police responded to reports in the area of Highway 7 East and Leslie Street.
Police say three victims were getting into a vehicle in a plaza parking lot when two armed suspects approached, demanded the keys, and discharged a firearm during the struggle, striking one victim in the leg. The suspects fled in the stolen vehicle, while a third suspect followed in a red Honda CR-V.
Thanks to assistance from the Air Support Unit, officers quickly located both vehicles and arrested all three suspects. A loaded firearm was also recovered. One suspect was injured during the arrest, triggering a mandatory investigation by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
The suspects have been identified as 18-year-old Joseph Campanion of Ajax and two 17-year-olds from Ajax and Whitby. They face multiple serious charges, including:
– Robbery with a firearm
– Discharging a firearm with intent
– Possession of a loaded firearm
Police also revealed that Campanion and one of the teens were on probation for unrelated matters at the time of the incident.
Investigators believe the suspects may be linked to other recent armed robberies across the region and are asking anyone with information to contact York Regional Police.
