York Regional Police have apprehended three individuals from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) following a foiled carjacking attempt in Markham on May 3. The incident, near Highway 7 and Woodbine Avenue, unfolded as officers were conducting surveillance on a vehicle and its three occupants, suspected of involvement in a prior carjacking.
At approximately 7:20 p.m., two suspects, one allegedly armed with a firearm, exited a parked vehicle and initiated an assault on two victims in a bid to steal their car keys. Prompt police intervention led to the swift arrest of all three suspects after a brief foot pursuit. Officers also recovered a loaded firearm from the scene.
The attempted carjacking mirrors a previous incident on April 25, also in the vicinity of Highway 7 and Woodbine Avenue, under investigation by York Regional Police. In that instance, a victim was accosted by two armed male suspects who demanded their keys and subsequently stole their vehicle. The suspects were reported to have arrived at the scene in a stolen grey Acura SUV.
Charged in connection with both incidents are Jahziah Griffiths, 19, of Brampton, along with 19-year-old Anthony Morris and 18-year-old Yohann Tshiunza, both residents of Toronto. The charges against them include robbery with a firearm, possession of a loaded prohibited firearm, disguise with intent, and possession of property obtained by crime.
Of particular concern is Griffiths’ legal status, as he was allegedly bound by a release order for unrelated criminal offenses at the time of the offences. Consequently, he faces additional charges for failing to comply with the release order.
