In a groundbreaking operation, the Toronto Police Service has announced the culmination of Project Finito, a 3.5-month investigation into a major drug importation and distribution network operating in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The outcome: seven arrests and the largest-ever seizure of crystal methamphetamine and powdered cocaine in the service’s history.
A staggering 551 kilograms of cocaine and 441 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine were confiscated during the operation, with an estimated street value of $90 million. The drugs, intercepted before reaching the streets of Toronto, spared communities from potential devastating consequences, including overdose deaths.
During a news conference, Superintendent Steve Watts, of the Organized Crime Enforcement unit, emphasized the significance of the seizure. “The drugs were destined for the streets of Toronto and beyond and would have inflicted significant damage on our communities,” he stated. Watts further highlighted that intercepting this drug flow prevented numerous overdose deaths.
The contraband, primarily entering Canada from the United States through land border points, was part of a “major” drug importation and distribution network. Besides the substantial drug seizure, law enforcement also confiscated one firearm, one vehicle, and approximately $95,000 in Canadian currency.
All suspects apprehended in connection with the case were residents of the GTA, operating in high-ranking positions within the drug trafficking network. Watts noted the significance of trust within such organizations, stating, “To be trusted with this amount, it’s significant.”
Two individuals from Ajax, 20-year-old Camron Longmore and 25-year-old Zubayul Hoque, are facing charges ranging from trafficking to possession for the purpose of trafficking. Etobicoke residents Bryan Sherritt and Abubakar Mohamed, along with Mississauga resident Tenzin Palden, also face charges related to possession for the purpose of trafficking and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.
Two Toronto residents, Bashir Hasan Abdi and Lucho Loder, were arrested in connection with the case. Abdi faces charges related to trafficking and possession, while Loder faces charges including trafficking, possession, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, and possession of proceeds of crime.
As the investigation unfolds, two suspects remain in custody, while the other five have been granted bail. The arrests mark a significant victory in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the GTA.
