A hit-and-run collision claimed the life of a 22-year-old cyclist in Malton last week. However, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon as police have now apprehended the alleged driver, bringing a sense of justice to this heartbreaking situation.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Airport Road and Thamesgate Drive around 3:15 a.m. on August 23rd. The victim, a 22-year-old woman, was riding her bicycle when she was struck by a blue 2018 Mazda 3 traveling north on Airport Road. Tragically, the driver did not stop to render aid or report the incident to the authorities.

A further twist in the story occurred when the vehicle was discovered abandoned on Goreway Drive, south of Rexdale Boulevard. Meanwhile, at the scene of the collision, the young woman was pronounced dead. While her name has not been released, it has been revealed that she was an exchange student who had been in Canada for the past four months.
On a positive note, Peel Regional Police announced on Friday that they had successfully apprehended the alleged driver, identified as Traishaun Delpeache. Delpeache faces several serious charges, including dangerous operation causing death, failure to stop after an accident causing death, flight from a peace officer, and driving a motor vehicle with an improper license.
Delpeache appeared in court for a bail hearing and has been remanded into custody until September 15th. It’s worth noting that Delpeache was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for a parole violation, adding another layer to this complex case.
Peel Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah expressed relief at Delpeache’s arrest, stating, “It is reassuring to hear that this repeat offender is being held in custody for a subsequent court date. This dangerous criminal can no longer endanger the public.” He further emphasized the community’s commitment to the safety of its residents.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is also involved in this case, as it was reported that the accused had interacted with a police officer prior to the collision. According to the SIU, an officer discovered a parked vehicle near Airport Road and Morningstar Drive and engaged with the driver. However, when the officer returned to his cruiser to verify information, the driver fled.
While this incident is marked by tragedy, the swift action of law enforcement in locating and apprehending the suspect provides a glimpse of hope for justice. The memory of the young cyclist will undoubtedly linger in the hearts of the community, serving as a poignant reminder of the importance of road safety and the responsibility we all share when we take to the streets.
