Peel Regional Police have announced the arrest of four women believed to be part of a criminal network that exploited victims of Chinese descent in illegal bawdy houses located in Mississauga.
The investigation, known as Project Pacific, involved a collaborative effort that resulted in the identification of 13 human trafficking survivors, multiple arrests, and the seizure of cash, drugs, and property.
According to a press release issued by the police on Wednesday, the network operated several illicit bawdy houses in Mississauga, taking advantage of individuals who found themselves in precarious financial situations. The victims, described as “vulnerable individuals,” were subjected to exploitation and victimization due to their limited ability to sustain themselves financially.
The arrests took place on March 27 and April 5, following the execution of numerous search warrants. The four women facing charges are identified as Leung Ngai, 59, from Milton, Yuan Yuan Zhang, 39, from Markham, Yu-Hobley Lan, 63, and Kwai Lin Tso, 55, both from Mississauga. Each of them is now facing a range of charges related to their involvement in the criminal network.
In a separate incident, on April 14, the police also apprehended Eamonn Handrahan, a 71-year-old male from Mississauga. Handrahan was charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich, responsible for Investigative and Emergency Services Command, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about human trafficking. He stated, “Human trafficking is something that can happen anywhere, and in many cases, the victims don’t know they’re being exploited or are too afraid to come forward.” He further assured the community that the victimization of vulnerable populations would not be tolerated.
The arrests made during Project Pacific shed light on the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat human trafficking and protect those at risk. Peel Regional Police’s successful collaboration in this investigation serves as a reminder of their commitment to safeguarding the community and ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable individuals.
As legal proceedings continue, it is hoped that the survivors will receive the necessary support and resources to aid in their recovery. This operation serves as a stern message that human trafficking will not be tolerated, and those responsible for such heinous acts will be held accountable for their actions.
