The recent murder of 23-year-old Viyaleta Lukoshka has left the community of Etobicoke in shock. The young woman was fatally shot at a condominium building located at Manitoba Street and Legion Road North in the early hours of May 10.
According to reports, police were called to the building at around 4:30 a.m. on May 10 for an unknown trouble call. Several residents of the building reported hearing a loud bang before security went to investigate. Upon arriving at the scene, they found Lukoshka with a gunshot wound. Paramedics tried to save her, but unfortunately, she died at the scene.
The incident has left the residents of the building shaken and has raised questions about their safety. While police have taken one person into custody, 34-year-old Kadeem Robinson of Toronto, and charged him with second-degree murder, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
The tragic incident has once again highlighted the need for increased efforts to prevent gun violence in Toronto. According to the Toronto Police Service’s website, there were 462 shootings in the city in 2020, resulting in 534 victims. These alarming numbers highlight the need for a comprehensive plan to address gun violence in Toronto, including increasing police presence in high-risk areas, implementing gun buyback programs, and supporting community-based initiatives to address the root causes of gun violence.
As the community mourns the loss of Viyaleta Lukoshka, investigators are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation. It is only through the collective efforts of law enforcement and community members that we can work towards a safer and more peaceful city.
