A man who was shot by the police in Toronto’s east end on Wednesday afternoon has passed away in hospital.
According to reports, the incident occurred behind the Shoppers World plaza, located at 3003 Danforth Avenue, at around 12:10 p.m. The initial reports to the police were about a man who was seen carrying a knife.
In response, the officer had discharged their firearm, according to a Twitter post by the Toronto police.

Aerial footage from the scene revealed the presence of several police vehicles and some debris on the ground beside a black car. Toronto police had set up a command post in the parking lot of the plaza.
At first, the injured person was said to be in critical condition by paramedics. But, just before 2 p.m., the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) tweeted to announce the death of the victim. The SIU is now handling the case, as it is responsible for investigating incidents involving the police, where there has been death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault, and/or where a firearm has been discharged at a person.
