A 24-year-old driver has been charged after a tragic hit-and-run accident in Scarborough, which left a pedestrian dead in the early hours of Sunday morning.

According to police reports, officers were called to the area of Markham Road and Sheppard Avenue East at approximately 12:35 a.m. on May 7, after receiving a report that a pedestrian had been hit by a vehicle.

The 58-year-old victim was crossing Sheppard Avenue East when he was struck by the vehicle, which then continued to travel westbound and failed to stop at the scene of the accident. The victim, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The incident sparked a search for the suspect vehicle, and on Tuesday, Toronto police announced that they had made an arrest in connection with the hit-and-run investigation.

Adam Hosseini, a 24-year-old resident of Toronto, was taken into custody and charged with “fail to stop at accident scene cause death”, as well as an unlisted Highway Traffic Act offense.

Hosseini appeared in court on Tuesday morning for a bail hearing, where he faced charges related to the fatal hit-and-run.

Police have also appealed to anyone who may have information about the incident to contact them, and are urging anyone with information to call them at 416-808-1900 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477) or www.222tips.com.
